(500) Days of Summer

A much overdue post about the lovely film that is (500) Days of Summer that i had wanted to see since it was released more than two years ago. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel who have the most adorable on screen chemistry, it really makes this film that much more lovable. As music plays a rather important role in the film, the characters of Summer and Tom bond over their love of The Smiths, i thought it was only necessary to write about the soundtrack.

A Story Of Boy Meets Girl Mychael Danna and Rob Simonsen
Us Regina Spektor
There's A Light That Never Goes Out The Smiths
Bad Kids Black Lips
There Goes The Fear Doves
You Make My Dreams Hall & Oates
Sweet Disposition The Temper Trap
Quelqu'un M'a Dit Carla Bruni
Mushaboom Feist
Hero Regina Spektor
Bookends Simon and Garfunkel
Vagabond Wolfmother
She's Got You High Mumm-ra
Here Comes Your Man Meaghan Smith
Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want The Smiths

This musical piece that accompanies the film is, as a whole, just a perfect reflection of Summer and Tom and their situation. I love the more alternative style of songs chosen with unique singers that evoke lyrics filled with cutesy phrases and that just reminds the audience of how adorable Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in his sweater vest.

One of the most highly rated tracks on the soundtrack, in my opinion, is Us by Regina Spektor. The fast paced beating of the piano notes along with the heavenly voice of Regina is wonderful, especially when she emphasises the vibrato style singing in the chorus. Equally, the lyrics and their meaning are just as perfect; i love the lines "they made a statue of us and it put it on a mountain top" as if people are putting you on a pedestal and are pushing you to live up to those expectations. She's certainly a wonderful artist, almost a quirkier Sara Bariellis, they both write beautiful lyrics with a gorgeous piano accompaniment.

Adding an element of old school, the incorporation of the feel good Hall and Oates track You Make My Dreams from the early 80's is great for a classic boogy song. It's even better whilst watching the film to see Tom dancing a musical number...i just love him even more. From a popular song, to bringing back the 80's and even crossing the Atlantic to incorporate a romantic French love song, the (500) Days of Summer soundtrack has really captured every aspect of music. Just a wonderful soundtrack that automatically relates to the adorable character of Tom and his unrequited love for his dream girl Summer Fin, (everybody now) awwwwhhh.

"(500) Days of Summer is not a love story. It is a story of boy meets girl"
